9 | The Obstacles Are The Path | Chris Fergusson

In Episode 9 of Vision & Graft I'm chatting to a good mate and a long time mentor Chris Fergusson. He's a cinematographer and photographer based in the UK and you can find links to his work at the bottom of this page.

During the conversation Chris talks about his photography project Lost in Process. He is selling a zine for the project that is available to order here

In this episode Chris gives an idea of the work a cinematographer does on a daily basis and gives a sense of intensity of his job. He goes onto share the path he followed to becoming a cinematographer and how it was unorthodox but lead to his success.

We then go onto discuss how he learned the techniques and skills to be a cinematographer and an artist and also maintain that growth as he moves forward. Chris highlights how he has benefitted from embracing his own style and actively moving away from comparison with his peers. We then get in deep discussing creative boundaries and how limiting your options can be creatively liberating.

During the break I announce a competition I'm running alongside Rosco to win a Rosco MIXBOOK Digital Swatchbook. Full T&Cs are available at visiongraft.com

Chris goes onto cover his experiences working with directors and other creative partners and how he nurtures those relationships. We talk about how a cinematographers job is mostly problem solving and how Chris juggles wearing many hats at work. He shares how his attitude to solving problems has been managed by maintaining a positive approach to handling them and having a mantra he repeats to himself.

I feel grateful that Chris then openly discusses the impact his career has had on his mental wellbeing and what he has done to try to understand the difficulties he has faced. He discusses his personal artwork and the benefits having his own creating projects has on his life. Chris then explains his idea for his project Lost in Process and how the project came together despite difficult setbacks.

Vision & Graft aims to inspire action, give hope and normalise the discussion of mental health issues within creative sectors as well as more widely throughout society.
